Rochechouart: a neighbourhood rising from the ashes

 

Located in the 9th arrondissement of Paris, Rochechouart is the 36th administrative district of the capital. Boulevard Rochechouart marks its northern border and is bounded to the south by Rue Lamartine and Rue Montholon. To the west, the Rue des Martyrs separates it from the Saint-Georges district, while Rue du Faubourg Poissonnière parts it from the 10th arrondissement to the east.

History

The district takes its name from Marguerite de Rochechouart de Montpipeau, forty-third abbess of Montmartre. Until the end of the 18th century, the area was mainly agricultural. Then the district had a food role after the construction of its slaughterhouse in 1810. Rochechouart then took an industrial turn with the installation of the Parisian Gas Company and the Godillot military supply workshops in the district. Famous personalities such as Victor Hugo and Georges Bizet lived there.

Cultural sites

  • Cité Napoléon: today classified as a historical monument, it was the first workers’ city of Paris. Inaugurated in 1851 at the request of Napoleon III, it has a large garden and a fountain. Its architecture was specially designed to ensure good hygiene conditions for its inhabitants.
  • Alexis Godillot’s House: an industrialist who remained famous for his famous “godillots”, he had his factories built at 54, rue de Rochechouart in 1854 and lived at 56 of the same street, in a neoclassical style mansion. In 1895, two years after his death, a violent fire reduced his factories and part of the district to ashes.

Local landmarks

  • Paul Valeyre Cultural and Sports Centre: the name of this complex pays homage to Paul Valeyre, a schoolteacher from the district who died for France in 1940. This centre is dedicated to swimming as well as many other sports and artistic activities. It is also possible to enjoy its gymnasium, its sports field and its library.
  • Phono Museum: since its opening in 2014, more than 250 period machines, all in working order, are on display. Some of its machines have been used in the cinema, in “La Môme” (Olivier Dahan) or “Inglorious Basterds” (Quentin Tarantino).

Parks

  • Square Montholon: inaugurated in 1863 thanks to Adolphe Alphand, the father of green spaces in Paris, it once belonged to the gardens of the private mansion of Charles-Henri Sanson, the famous executioner who decapitated Louis XVI. The park extends over 4,571 m2 and is home to numerous tree species.
  • Square d’Anvers: its name echoes the occupation of Antwerp by the French army in 1832. Located on the site of the former slaughterhouse of Montmartre, it was also designed by Adolphe Alphand. In 2000, a bandstand was reinstalled there in order to revive the original spirit of the square.
