56th administrative district of Paris, the district of Plaisance is located in the 14th district of the capital. It is bounded to the north by the area of the Paris-Montparnasse station, to the south by Boulevard Adolphe Pinard, to the west by the railway tracks and Rue du Commandant René Mouchotte and to the east by Rue des Plantes, Rue Daguerre and Rue de Gassendi, Avenue Jean Moulin, Avenue du Maine, Avenue de la Porte de Châtillon and the old railway route called “La Petite Ceinture”.

History

The origin of the name of the Plaisance district is uncertain, it could be linked to the presence of places of pleasure in the district from the 18th century or to the name of a castle that stood there. The creation of the district dates back to the important building sites of the city of Paris in 1840, small housing estates were built between the Chaussée de Vanves and the old Moulin-au-Beurre roads leading to the beginning of the Plaisance district.

Cultural sites

  • Musée Adzak: located in Roy Adzak’s studio, the museum exhibits the work of the British sculptor and photographer Royston Wright, known as Roy Adzak. The studio is also an artists’ residence.
  • Petite Ceinture: like some of its neighbours, the Plaisance neighbourhood includes part of the Petite Ceinture, a former railway line circling Paris, which offers an original point of view.
  • Notre-Dame-du-Travail Parish: located at 59 rue Vercingétorix, this neo-Romanesque style church, the most recent version of which was completed in 1902, is remarkable for its use of an innovative metal frame and exposed beams.

Local landmarks

Most of the 14th arrondissement’s important landmarks are located in the neighbouring districts of the Plaisance neghbourhood, making it a peaceful and residential area, not far from the Parisian hustle and bustle of its neighbours.

 

  • Jardin De La ZAC-Didot: this 3800m² green space is accessible from the Raymond Losserand and was inaugurated in 2004.
  • Rue des Thermopyles: this is one of the few streets in Paris that is still paved with large cobblestones. Decorated with houses adorned with abundant wisteria, it has retained a rural appearance.
