Discover the Place Vendôme district - Paris 01

The Place-Vendôme neighbourhood is the 4th administrative district of Paris’s 1st arrondissement, and obviously takes its name from the square of the same name. Since the imperial decree of 1 November 1859, this district has been delimited by a line that starts at Rue de Rivoli, continues through Rue de Saint-Florentin, Rue Richepance and Rue Duphot, and then Rue Neuve-des-Capucines, Rue Neuve-des-Petits-Champs, Rue Neuve-Saint-Roch and Rue du Dauphin before getting back to Rue de Rivoli.

History

Place Vendôme was officially created in 1790. It was the result of the work of Jules Hardouin-Mansart, superintendent of the buildings of King Louis XIV, who wanted to air out Paris. This project was not completed until its takeover by the City of Paris and the privatisation of the operation. In 1792, it took the name of Section des Piques. In 1871, it was renamed Place Internationale (it was also at this time that the Vendôme column was destroyed). It was only much later that it took its official name of Place-Vendôme neighbourhood. Moreover, as previously mentioned, the district was redesigned in 1859 to become the one we know today.

Cultural sites

  • Notre-Dame de l’Assomption Church: built in 1676, it was abandoned in 1884. Since then, it has been the Polish church in Paris.
  • Place du Marché Saint-Honoré: a market appeared for the first time in this square in 1810 (formerly there was a convent for Dominicans). After the construction of pavilions and their destruction, a car park was placed there, and then a huge glass building designed by the architect Ricardo Bofill (with the assistance of Paribas).

Among the Place Vendôme’s local landmarks, there are, of course, many shops and luxury hotels (including the greatest Parisian jewellers and the Bataille de Francès hotel, which used to house the embassy of Texas).
