Discover the Palais Royal district - Paris 01

Located in Paris centre (in the 1st arrondissement), the Palais Royal neighbourhood is the third largest administrative district in Paris. Rectangularly shaped, it is limited by Rue des Petit-Champs to the north (and the 2nd arrondissement), Rue de la Croix-des-Petits-Champs and Rue de Marengo (and the Halles neighbourhood) to the east, Rue de Rivoli (and the Saint-Germain-l’Auxerrois neighbourhood) to the south and Rue Saint-Roch (and the Place Vendôme neighbourhood) to the west.

History

This district was created during the French Revolution. At that time, it was divided into 4 areas: Saint-Roch church, Saint-Philippe-du-Roule church, Saint-Honoré church and, finally, the church of the Jacobins. First called “section de la Montagne” (revolutionary name) then “section de la Butte-des-Moulins”, it became Palais Royal after a prefectorial order on 10 May 1811.

Cultural sites

  • Equestrian statute of Joan of Arc: located at Place des Pyramides, this statue, inaugurated in 1874, is the work of the French sculptor Emmanuel Fremiet. Ordered following France’s defeat after the Franco-German war in 1870, it symbolises the recapture. It was also classified as a historical monument in 1992.
  • Saint-Roch Church: built between 1653 and 1722, it was classified as a historical monument in 7 December 1914.

Local landmarks

There are many local landmarks in this neighbourhood. Although it is impossible to list them all, we will give you some important ones.

 

  • Palais-Royal mansion: bought in 1624 by Richelieu, what was then Rambouillet mansion underwent a complete transformation. The mansion was given to King Louis XIV in 1636 and to Philippe d’Orléans (his nephew) in 1715. The latter made it his residence, but also a place in competition with Versailles. The history of the Palais Royal also bears witness to the French Revolution. The Royal Palace underwent many restorations to become the building we know today.
  • Théâtre de la Comédie-Française: both an institution and a beautiful building, it is the only state theatre in France that has a permanent group of comedians. In addition, the chair where Molière died can be found at the back of the busts gallery.

Lovers of beautiful monuments do not know where to look when they walk around this neighbourhood. Today, theatres and different cafés, restaurants and hotels are open to Parisians and tourists alike. This gives the district a reputation as a chic and lively neighbourhood. Daniel Buren’s work “Deux Plateaux” can be seen in the main courtyard of Palais Royal, which has been widely discussed since its creation in 1986.
