Discover the Les Halles district - Paris 01

Les Halles neighbourhood is located at the heart of Paris. In addition to being the second administrative district in Paris, it is the capital’s geographical centre as it is a compulsory passage point for many metro and RER trains. On the surface, Les Halles is bounded by Rue Etienne-Marcel to the north, Boulevard Sébastopol to the east, Rue de Rivoli to the south and Rue Croix-des-Petits-Champs and Rue Marengo to the west.

History

Built on a wetland and then a cemetery (dating from the Merovingian period), les Halles are so called because it was one of the largest markets in Paris. Located in the city centre, it was a place where Parisians could buy fresh food from stalls that could even be set up in the adjacent streets. Its origins date back to the 12th century and Les Halles underwent many transformations over time (including construction of pavilions dedicated to the sale of specific products). However, in the 20th century, before the decrease in visitors’ number, it was decided to move this huge market to Rungis and La Villette. A concerted development zone was created in 1970, while the RER station was inaugurated in 1977, the Trade and Leisure Forum in 1979, the gardens in 1986 and the Parc océanique Cousteau (Cousteau Oceanic Park) in 1989.

Cultural sites

  • Fontaine des Innocents: classified as a historical monument since 1862, this fountain also known as Fontaine des Nymphes was built in 1548 to celebrate the king’s entry into Paris. Modified and moved on many occasions, it has lost none of its beauty over time.
  • Saint-Eustache Church: it is said that this church was built in the13th century. It was classified as a historical monument in 1862 and renovated in the 1980s. Many personalities passed through it to be baptised (Richelieu, Molière, Madame de Pompadour), to make their communion (Louis XIV), to get married or to be buried there (Colbert, Marivaux, Mirabeau…).

Local landmarks

  • Bourse de commerce (Paris): previously located in Palais Brongniart, the Bourse de commerce (Commodities Exchange) replaced the wheat hall destroyed by fire in 1854 and closed in 1873. Formerly, many markets used to be held there. Today, most of the building is managed by the Chambre de commerce et d’industrie de Paris (Paris Chamber of Commerce and Industry). It will also be the Parisian site of Pinault collection (upon completion in 2019).
  • Forum des Halles: the forum des Halles was founded in 1979. It was renovated and redesigned in 2010. In 2017, it was the third most visited shopping centres in France.

  • Jardin Nelson-Mandela: formerly named Jardin des Halles, it is located at 1, Rue Pierre Lescot in the 1st neighbourhood of Paris. It is accessible by metro lines 1, 3, 4, 11 and 14 (Châtelet), by RER A, B and D (Châtelet-Les Halles), and by bus lines 21, 70, 72 and 74 (Châtelet).
