Discover the Grenelle district - Paris 15

The Grenelle district is one of the four districts that make up the 15th arrondissement of Paris and corresponds to its 59th administrative district. It is bounded to the north-west by the Seine, to the north-east by Avenue de Suffren, to the south-east by Avenue de Lowendal and Rue de la Croix-Nivert and to the south-west by Rue des Entrepreneurs, Rue de Linois and Pont de Grenelle.

History

A land that was virtually uninhabited for centuries because of the difficulty of cultivating it, part of today’s Grenelle district was attached to the Invalides section of the 10th arrondissement of the capital when the first twelve arrondissements of Paris were created in 1795. It was then renamed the Invalides district in 1811.

Cultural sites

  • Pont de Bir-Hakeim: listed as a historical monument since 1986, the Pont Bir-Hakeim is a two-level bridge built at the beginning of the 20th century. It welcomes the aerial metro line 6 on the upper level as well as pedestrians and cyclists on the central promenade at road level.
  • Maison de la Culture du Japon: located at 110 quai Branly, the Maison de la Culture du Japon aims to disseminate Japanese culture. It offers exhibitions, film screenings, shows as well as tea ceremonies and courses on Japanese culture.

Local landmarks

Located along the left bank of the Seine, the Grenelle district offers many points of interest as well as an unobstructed view of the Eiffel Tower located in the neighbouring district.

  • Ile aux Cygnes: located on the Seine between the Bir-Hakeim and Grenelle bridges, Ile aux Cygnes is an artificial island 890 metres long. All the way through, there is a public promenade surrounded by trees and which exists since 1878.
  • Saint-Léon de Paris Church: this parish church is located on the Place du Cardinal Amette. It bears the name of Pope Léon Legrand and was built in the art-deco style.

  • Jardin Nicole-de-Hautecloque: Accessible via number 23 rue Desaix, the square Nicole-de-Hautecloque is located on the site of the very old garden of the Château and the Ferme of Grenelle.
  • Square Yvette Chauvire (formerly Square de la place du Commerce): located at 18, place du Commerce. It is accessible via line 8 at the Commerce metro station.
