Ternes: from wetlands to luxury.

 

65th administrative district in Paris, Ternes neighbourhood is part of the 17th arrondissement. To southwest, it is bounded by Avenue de la Grande-Armée. Nearby is the famous Arc de Triomphe. From the northwest to the north, Boulevards des Maréchaux and Gouvion-Saint-Cyr mark the neighbourhood’s end. To the northeast, Héliopolis and Rennequin streets separate it from Plaine-Monceau. Finally, Avenue Wagram, Rue des Renaudes and Boulevard de Courcelles form the southeast border of the neighbourhood.

History

In the Middle Ages, Ternes village was only a modest hamlet surrounded by forests and wetlands. A royal hunting area, this zone remained devoted to the leisure activities of the powerful men until the Revolution and the abolition of privileges. The neighbourhood’s name comes probably from the term “villa externa” (a farm outside the city) that became “Ternes” over time. This fortified farm was originally Ternes old castle. Like the rest of the 17th arrondissement’s neighbourhoods, Ternes became part of Paris in 1860.

Cultural sites

  • Saint-Ferdinand-des-Ternes Church: this neo-Byzantine style church was built between 1937 and 1957 to replace the old church that had become too small. This is where Saint-Ferdinand des Ternes – Sainte-Thérèse-de-l’Enfant-Jésus parish worship is held.
  • Ternes ancient castle: it is classified as a historical monument since 1949. The first time it was mentioned dates back to Middle Ages, when abbey of Saint-Denis evoked a “villa externa”, a farm outside the city.

Local landmarks

  • Palais des congrès de Paris: covering an area of nearly 30,000 m², this venue is a business, conference and entertainment centre. It is located in the neighbourhood’s western edge, not far from Bois de Boulogne and Neuilly-sur-Seine. It houses seven halls and four auditoriums. Hotels are nearby, including Hyatt Regency Paris Étoile (also known as Concorde La Fayette Hotel). It is one of the highest hotels in France at a height of 137 metres.
