The Princes-Marmottan: a posh neighbourhood

 

To the north-east of Boulogne-Billancourt, the Princes-Marmottan neighbourhood unfolds in a star shape around Place Denfert-Rochereau. This is where its streets start, extending north to Boulevard d’Auteuil and Roland-Garros, and west to Avenue Jean-Baptiste-Clément and Rue Fessart. To the east, the border with Paris is marked by the vast sports complex comprising the Parc des Princes, the Jean-Bouin stadium and the Géo-André-Stade Français sports hall. To the south, after following Route de la Reine, the Princes-Marmottan neighbourhood makes a small breakthrough through Rue Thiers in the city centre neighbourhood to Avenue Édouard-Vaillant.

History

The Princes-Marmottan neighbourhood was built in the Haussmann style and still preserves the bourgeois and top range architecture that has characterised it since its beginnings. Indeed, the bourgeoisie which regularly travelled between Auteuil and Versailles had made it a privileged holiday resort. It is now a fashionable neighbourhood that enjoys its proximity to the Bois de Boulogne, the Longchamp hippodrome and the Courts Roland-Garros.

Cultural sites

  • Sainte-Cécile Church: Built in the 18th century, it was first a simple chapel dedicated to the Child Jesus. It has a neoclassical front which can be reached by double steps.
  • Le Corbusier’s apartment workshop: The architect and urban planner Le Corbusier lived and worked in this duplex between 1934 and 1965. From the outside, the apartment stands out with its entirely glazed fronts, an innovation at the time. Le Corbusier experimented concepts, materials and the use of the roof garden in this building…

Local landmarks

  • Jean-Léon-Courrèges mansion: it is one of the architectural gems in the 1930s in Princes-Marmottan neighbourhood. Built in 1928, once inhabited by André Malraux, this mansion still belongs to his original family. Between regionalism and Art Deco style, this building lets you admire its facades and its wrought iron.

Parks

  • Square des Tilleuls: at the corner of the Tilleuls and Escudier streets, this park creates an intimate vibe by focussing on flowers: Sylvie anemone, Ethiopian arum, sea buckthorn, honeysuckle, cherry laurel… It is also enhanced by two chess tables allowing everyone to pass the time while taking a breath of fresh air.
  • Jardin Guilbaud: all along, this garden is located just in front of the Parc des Princes. It is dedicated to children’s activities, like playing ball and bike riding under the horse chestnut trees up to 6 years old. Children’s games exist in the southern part, while the north includes a large massif of cherry oleanders.
