Chaillot: a historical district.

 

Chaillot is the 64th administrative district of Paris and is part of the 16th arrondissement. The Seine marks its southern border. To the east, Avenue Marceau delimits the district while Avenue de la Grande-Armée separates the north of Chaillot from the 17th arrondissement. To the west, Malakoff and Raymond Poincaré avenues mark the boundary between the Chaillot and Porte-Dauphine neighbourhoods.

History

Before its integration into Paris in 1860, Chaillot village was home to many royal residences and aristocratic retreats. Its castle was thus located on the hill where Place du Trocadéro stands today. The oldest plan of Chaillot known to date is that of Saint-Victor, established in the 16th century. It features the large sewer, the seigneurial house, the bell tower of Saint-Pierre Church and the hill. After the annexation of Chaillot, Haussmann’s works almost entirely transformed the village, to the point of erasing even its vestiges.

Cultural sites

  • Cité de l’architecture et du patrimoine (City of Architecture and Heritage): this is the largest architecture centre in the world with an area of 22,000 m². In this museum, you will find numerous drawings, prototypes, monumental casts, stained glass windows and murals.
  • Aquarium de Paris (Paris Aquarium): Built in 1867, this is the first aquarium in the world. Within its 3,500 m² area, the building houses 10,000 specimens including about 500 species of fish and invertebrates, not to mention plants. It is the second largest aquarium in France, after the one in Boulogne-sur-Mer.

Local landmarks

  • Arc de Triomphe: Erected between 1806 and 1836, this building has been on the list of historical monuments since 1896. It was originally built to commemorate the victory of Napoleon’s armies at Austerlitz. Today, it also pays tribute to the combatants of the First World War: the remains of the Unknown Soldier are buried here.

  • Jardins du Trocadéro: a must see for all visitors to the Eiffel Tower, these gardens offer a breathtaking water show: a series of pools cascade down into a large pond. The latter, with its 20 water cannons, discharges 8,240 m3 per hour.
