Porte Dauphine: subtle luxury.

 

Porte-Dauphine is the 63rd administrative district of Paris. Part of the 16th arrondissement, it is bounded to the south by Henri Martin and Georges Mandel avenues. To the east, Malakoff and Raymond Poincaré avenues mark the district’s border. Porte Maillot, Boulevard Maillot and Boulevard Maurice Barres form its northern boundary. Finally, to the west, the Porte-Dauphine district is bordered by a large portion of the Bois de Boulogne.

History

The district takes its name from the Porte Dauphine, located today at the western end of Avenue Foch. In the past, the north-western part of the former village of Chaillot stood there. During the Second Empire, Baron Haussmann undertook works that made what was left of the hamlet disappear. Nowadays, the architecture of the buildings refers to this period with its recognisable style.

Cultural sites

  • Musée de la Contrefaçon (Counterfeit Museum): this 200 m² museum, opened in 1951, aims to inform its visitors about the extent of counterfeiting, but also about its impact on the world economy. It exhibits 350 counterfeit products that allow the curious to learn how to differentiate between real and fake by comparing them to authentic objects.
  • Fondation Louis Vuitton: located in the Bois de Boulogne, this building, designed by the famous architect Frank Gehry, aims to perpetuate the sponsorship initiatives undertaken by the Group since 1990. It is therefore possible to admire this deconstructivist-style building and the collections it houses.

Local landmarks

  • The northern part of the Bois de Boulogne: a section of this gigantic green space (846 hectares) is part of the Porte-Dauphine district. It is possible to discover many fairy-tale places such as the Jardin d’acclimatation or the Rivière Enchantée.

Parks

  • Jardin d’acclimatation: this 19-hectare green space is a leisure and recreation park. In the middle of the 19th century, it was a simple garden to acclimatise exotic animals for agricultural, commercial or leisure purposes. Since 2017, a lot of work has been done to redevelop the park in the spirit of the steampunk theme.
  • Square Alexandre-et-René-Parodi: in this green space dedicated to leisure, it is possible to walk among chestnut, plane, birch or elm trees. Other trees, which are in the most beautiful bloom, invite you to visit them at this time, especially the cherry trees with flowers originating from Japan.
