Discover the Necker district - Paris 15

Located in the eastern part of the 15th arrondissement of Paris, the Necker district is the 58th administrative district of the capital. It is bordered to the north by Boulevard Montparnasse, Rue de Sèvres, Avenue de Saxe and Avenue de Suffren, to the west by Rue de la Croix Nivert, to the east by part of the Montparnasse station lines and Rue du Départ, and to the south by Rue Mademoiselle, Rue Cambronne and Rue de la Procession.

History

Before the surrounding villages were incorporated into the city of Paris in 1840, the Necker district was an uninhabited area between Paris and the village of Vaugirard, which went on to become the Saint-Lambert district. It takes its name from the hospital founded in 1778 by the wife of Jacques Necker, General Director of Finance for Louis XVI, which was renamed Necker Hospital in 1802.

Cultural sites

  • Montparnasse train station: contrary to popular belief, the Paris-Montparnasse train station is located in the Necker district. It is one of the six major Parisian railway stations and its trains travel to the west and southwest of France.
  • Tour Montparnasse: the highest skyscraper in inner Paris is 209 metres tall. Located at 33 Avenue du Maine, it was the tallest office building in Europe when it was built in the early 1970s, and remained so until 1990, when it was dethroned by the Messeturm in Frankfurt, Germany.
  • Necker children’s hospital: this hospital complex is the result of the merger between Necker Hospital and the children’s hospital in the 1920s. The hospital, which gave its name to the Necker district, specializes in paediatrics.
  • Pasteur Institute: this private French foundation dedicated to the study of biology, micro-organisms, diseases and vaccines was created in 1887. It takes its name from Louis Pasteur, who developed the first rabies vaccine two years earlier.

Local landmarks

  • Jardin Atlantique: built above the tracks of Montparnasse train station in the Necker district, the Jardin Atlantique covers more than three hectares and is surrounded by the buildings of the “Maine-Montparnasse” complex.

  • Square Necker: these gardens are accessible by metro lines 6 (Pasteur) and 12 (Volontaires).
  • Square de l’Oiseau Lunaire: created in 1969, its name comes from the work of the sculptor and ceramicist Joan Miró (1893-1983): “Lunar Bird” (1975). It can be reached by bus lines 6 (Sèvres-Lecourbe) and 12 (Volontaires) and by bus line 80 (Cambronne-Lecourbe).
